Texas Hold’em is a card game played with a 52-card deck. In casinos, there’s a dealer, but he will not play the game. A dealer button moves around the table to show theoretically who would be dealing the cards. This is done to show who must place the blinds. There should be at least 2 people, along with a dealer to properly play the game.
The game must start with the two players to the left of the dealer placing a prearranged amount of money down. This is called your Big Blind, and your Small Blind. The big blind is usually the minimum bet allowed, and the small blind is half that amount. Once the blinds are in place, the dealer starts to give out cards. Each player will receive 2 cards face down. They may view their cards right away, but only their cards. Once everyone has their first cards, the betting may begin.
The betting will start with the person who placed the small blind. If he wishes to put the 50% down to match the big blind, and to stay in the game, or raise, he may. If he doesn’t wish to stay in the game, he may fold at this point and only lose the small blind.
Once everyone has placed their bets, called or raised, the dealer will take the first card off the top of the deck and lay it face down. This is called a Burn. No one will know what that card is, and it helps to stop any cheating. The dealer then lays down 3 community cards face up. This is known as the Flop. Players may use these cards with their dealt 2, and the betting continues again.
Betting with $0.00 is acceptable in this stage of Hold’em. It is called a Check. The first person that bets can simply check, and if everyone else wishes, they may check as well. If no one decides to bet money on this round, the next card—the Turn, will be placed in the community pile “free of charge” for the players to view.
The process of checking, betting and/or raising continues through the 5th card of the community pile known as the River. After the 5th round of betting, those who have stayed in game without folding their cards will determine the winner of the pot. The person who raised last will show their cards first. If they are the winner, they take the pot and the other players do not have to show their hands if they don’t wish to. Texas Hold’em is based on having the best 5-card poker hand.
