OurPoker.co.uk The Turn

When playing Holdem or Omaha poker the fourth common card dealt to the center of the table face up is called the Turn.  This single card follows the dealing of the Flop, which followed the cards dealt to the players.  In the case of Holdem there were two cards and in the case of Omaha there were four cards dealt to the players face down.  Between the dealing of cards, there is a round of betting.  The last card dealt which is called the River follows the Turn card and the betting round.  When the River card is dealt the Board is completed.  A betting round follows the River card and the winning hand is decided by showing the hands that made the call.  The best five-card poker hand wins the pot.  In the case of Holdem it is literally the best five-card hand out of the seven cards each player is assigned.  In the case of Omaha it is the best five-card hand made up of two of the players down cards and three from the Board.

When the Turn card is dealt the ratio of cards each player has is six out of seven in Holdem and eight out of nine in Omaha.  This knowledge gives each player the feel for who has the best hand at this stage of the play.  In addition, the betting is usually an indication at this point   Of course one or more of the players may be bluffing.  With only the deadly River card to be dealt, the winning hand is well on its way to being decided.  Except that the River card can cause havoc with a sure looking winner and make another unbeatable.  It is this unknown at this point that makes for the gamble in both of these games, making for some huge pots.  It is this possibility that makes some gamble and others decide that they do not want to take the chance on a favorable River card.

The Turn card could be called the decider as it causes some to fold and others to stay and play.  With most of the hand known to each player, the stay and play crown are figuring the odds and making the call of bets with the knowledge that they may lose, but are willing to take the risk.  If they make their hand, they know that it will likely be unbeatable.  They can make a hand that is referred to as the Nuts.  It is this lure after the Turn card that makes both of these games end up with huge pots.  The possible winning hand is likely to raise and try to force out possible winning draws.   Some real gamblers will raise if they have several outs that they feel will give them a sure winner.  The play after the Turn card can be fast and furious.  The betting can get down right scary for those that are weak of heart.  Those with the skill of figuring odds will make the call based on the odds.  Those that depend on pure luck will do the same.  The odds player over the long haul will come out the winner.  The lucky player will win until their luck ends.

Poker is a game of skill and luck, but skill over time will be the winner.  Figuring the odds after the Turn card can be the difference between being a winning poker player and a losing poker player.  The ability to calculate pot odds after the Turn card is an invaluable skill that all good poker players have mastered.
This takes some practice to do right and many players never bother to learn this important aspect of Turn card decision-making.  The good players master this early in their poker education.
